    Avenging Angels: Mystery Scene

    Share

The perfect conclusion for a column entitled “Very Original” is Mary Stanton’s Avenging Angels (Berkley Prime Crime, $7.99). This is the third in the Beaufort & Company Series although Stanton is no newcomer to mystery writing, having written numerous entries in the Hemlock Falls series under the name of Claudia Bishop. Savannah, Georgia, isn’t Hemlock Falls, though, and in its supernaturally bizarre manner it offers relocated attorney Brianna Winston-Beaufort a highly appreciative, albeit deceased, clientelle. Bree’s late great uncle bequeathed to her his boutique law firm, with its unique practice niche: representing clients in the appellate Celestial Court system. Talk about courts of last resort!

In Avenging Angels Bree takes on the case of a banker who allegedly committed suicide after a financial debacle. You will need to read the book to fully fathom author Stanton’s ingenuity with plot, but trust me, her narrative is out of this world. While nothing could convince me to take any of Bree’s cases on a contingency fee, her preternatural abilities with the supernatural render her the perfect representative for the downtrodden dead. Give this very original series a trial read. Verdict: excellent!

“Intriguing and wholly different and original. I was hooked from page one. Defending Angels is at once charming, erudite and chilling. This book should give Mary Stanton the same kind of cult following usually reserved for Charlaine Harris!”
