Help save a horse from the slaughterhouse

    This holiday season, give life.

Instead of trading fruit baskets with friends and family, think about a gift that really matters – a donation toward retraining a rescued animal for a meaningful new life.

Little Brook Farm in Old Chatham NY is a rescue facility sheltering 60 horses. Owner Lynn Cross has run the farm for 32 years, and specializes in taking in injured or unsound horses whose likely fate was the slaughterhouse, giving them time to heal, and finding new ways for their lives to be useful.

Little Brook Farm partners with “Balanced Innovative Teaching Strategies” (B.I.T.S.) which is a registered non-profit (501-C3) with the N.Y. State Dept. of Education, and its horse rescue effort is key to the B.I.T.S. educational program. Your donation of $50 (or $100, or $30) can be earmarked for a specific horse’s needs, and you are invited to make an appointment to visit “your” horse at any time.

Please make out a check to BITS, PO Box 127, Old Chatham NY 12136. All donations will be gratefully acknowledged, and all are tax deductible.

“May” is a small bay Shetland pony. Six months ago, laminitis (the disease that killed Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro) left her feet so sore that she could not stand. Her overwhelmed owner was prepared to put her down, but her vet called Little Brook Farm instead. Now May is a mount for young children – though when off duty she kicks up her heels.

“Iorek” is a purebred Irish Draft Horse. He once would have been a desirable hunter or dressage mount, but a badly infected foot meant his only likely purchaser was the slaughter industry. Like most of the draft breeds Iorek has a kind and generous nature, and once his foot has healed he will be a valuable addition to the lesson program.

“Intriguing and wholly different and original. I was hooked from page one. Defending Angels is at once charming, erudite and chilling. This book should give Mary Stanton the same kind of cult following usually reserved for Charlaine Harris!”
